Keep fireworks from sizzling out with donation to July 4th Spectacular

The Fireworks Committee is running short of funds for the annual patriotic celebration visible throughout most of Santa Paula, a free show that depends on the community.

And it’s up to the community to make sure the fireworks don’t fizzle out by making up the shortfall of this year’s expenses.

Do not fear — there’s no threat to this year’s event said Ginger Gherardi, Santa Paula City Councilwoman and Co-Chair of the Fireworks Committee, but funding could make the 2017 fireworks show fizzle out.

The annual show costs $15,000 to stage with half paid in March: “Right now we are several thousands short of covering the rest of this year’s expenses,” she noted.

“The fireworks will go on because we have enough money from previous years,” to create a reserve, “however, it is a bad precedent not to cover our expenses.”

This year said Gherardi, “We lost several major sponsors who are no longer in business and a number of our regular contributors — and groups — have not yet donated,” as they have in years’ past.

This year’s pyrotechnic party — held July 4 of course! — is celebrating the 240th anniversary of America’s Independence Day. This year the 4th of July falls on a Monday so the fireworks spectacular will be at the tail end of a three-day holiday weekend.

It’s some party: the Fireworks Spectacular can be seen throughout Santa Paula with many residents staging viewing parties. Whether from a hillside home, Main Street or at Harding Park where the fireworks show is held, everyone is invited to enjoy the “rockets bursting in air” signifying the battles for freedom.

The Rotary Club of Santa Paula is again the lead agency in collecting and dispersing donations in cooperation with the city and others, including the Optimist Club.

Patriotic White & Blue collection cans are displayed on merchants’ counters where people can also make a contribution...any amount is welcome and all donations are tax deductible.

“People can contribution to the donation cans located at supportive businesses such as Zapparelli’s Pizza, Lairds Butcher Shop, the Ace Heritage Hardware and a few other merchant locations. Every contribution,” stressed Gherardi, “counts…this is a real family event for everyone to enjoy and we need everybody’s help to continue it.”

Donations, large or small, can be sent to Rotary – Fireworks, P.O. Box 809, Santa Paula, CA 93061.

You can also give a donation directly to any member of the Rotary Club.
