Don and Debbie Johnson, editors and publishers of the Santa Paula Times, are recognized as Honorary Chairs of the 2016 Santa Paula Relay For Life. Since the first Santa Paula RFL event in 2002, the Johnsons and their Santa Paula Times as well as newspaper staff have supported this American Cancer Society event with both physical involvement and through the publication.

“Without their selfless commitment to our event, success in raising over $1,000,000 would not have been possible; Don and Debbie are wonderful people who continually give to our community,” says John Marquez, this year’s Relay co-chair (along with Netti Farrar).

Other Santa Paula Times staff have also been directly involved: “Brian Wilson has been on the field taking fabulous action photos of participants that make the cover SP Times, and Peggy Kelly has spun her moving prose describing the Relay to the community,” notes Bob Orlando, past event chair.

Relay For Life is a 24-hour team event that recognizes a day in the life of a person with cancer.  Funds raised support many programs including cancer-curing research and driving cancer patients to and from therapy as well as doctor’s appointments.

This year’s Relay for Life will commence at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30 and continue for 24 hours — because cancer never sleeps — through 10 a.m. Sunday, May 1 on the Isbell Middle School athletic field.

“Relay for Life is the premier American Cancer Society fundraising event; we appreciate what our community has done but,” notes Marquez, “we always need more.”

Individuals, clubs, churches, and businesses interested in participating, forming a team, or wanting more information should go online to RelayForLife.org/SantaPaulaCA, or contact Netti at 797-0272, John at 297-5071, or Bob 218-8280.
