Santa Paulans should double-check their calendars to make sure they attend the February 3 public scoping meeting hosted by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) addressing proposed safety enhancements on Highway 126.

The issue has been a controversial one in the Santa Clara River Valley for years with residents and property owners fearing enhancements potentially would create disruptions and hazards due to agricultural transportation needs of growers on both sides of Highway 126.

The February 3 meeting will be held at the Community Center, 530 W. Main St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

According to a Caltrans press release, the agency is “formally initiating studies for the project to enhance safety throughout the State Route 126 corridor and reduce potential conflicting traffic movements.”

The project stretches from Hallock Drive to Fillmore’s E Street, approximately seven miles. Reportedly the project would cost about $70 million.

Caltrans, according to the press release, “is considering options that include a concrete median barrier or a raised median island with visual markers. Possible features include roundabouts, wider road curves, an acceleration/deceleration lane at railroad crossings, retaining walls and improved highway access including driveways at various locations.”

Those that attended the scoping meeting in Fillmore last week said public comment is not being accepted for the record; those with concerns must submit their comments in writing.

“Caltrans is soliciting written comments from public agencies, private entities, and interested/affected individuals regarding any potential social, economic, community, traffic, safety and environmental issues related to this project,” its impacts and importance to the community.

Caltrans, “is interested in hearing the point of view of all parties interested in the project, to ensure that all relevant factors are considered.”

Hard copies of written comments, suggestions and inquiries also can be submitted by March 4 and mailed to Tami Podesta, Branch Chief; California Department of Transportation; Division of Environmental Planning (SR-126 Safety Enhancement Project); 100 S. Main St. Suite 100, MS 16A; Los Angeles, CA 90012.
