Almost 20 firefighters were called to the scene of a structure fire Tuesday that caused extensive damage to a granny flat off 6th Street just north of East Santa Paula Street and south of Pleasant Valley Street.

Then again early Wednesday morning they returned to a report that the fire had rekindled.

According to Santa Paula Fire Firefighter/PIO Andy VanSciver the December 22 fire was reported by “multiple calls” to 911 Dispatch at approximately 12:11 p.m.

Santa Paula Fire engines were dispatched a minute later.

When SPFD Engine 81 arrived on scene Captain John Harber and the crew found a structure fire “to a granny flat with an attached garage in the 300 block of N. Sixth Street, off a little alley,” and behind the main 6th Street facing residences.

“There was smoke and fire from the residence side,” of the structure and the call was upgraded to a full response.

SPFD Engine 82 with Captain Carlos Arana and crew were second on the scene and ultimately Ventura County Fire was also summoned.

Firefighters quickly determined, said VanSciver that no one was inside the approximately 400-square-feet granny flat.

Santa Paula Police closed 6th Street during the incident.

The fire said VanSciver, “was declared knocked down at 12:31 p.m., less than 15 minutes after firefighters first arrived on the scene.”

“Nobody was hurt, no firefighters injured and no one home at the time of the fire,” the cause of which is being investigated by Ventura County Fire.

“We don’t know yet how it started,” in the main room of the flat.

VanSciver said damages are estimated at $30,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents. Other than the attached garage, the fire threatened no other structures.

VanSciver said Wednesday morning at about 5:08 a.m. fire personnel was again summoned to the scene where the fire had “rekindled…the day before we had filled it with foam and water but there was still a little hot spot…”

Santa Paula Fire Engines 81 and 82 as well as Ventura County Fire Engine 26 were at the scene as personnel “Re-overhauled it again…”

VanSciver said firefighters remained on scene for about two hours to ensure there were no more hot spots.
