Two people familiar to Santa Paula Police were arrested Tuesday after allegedly stealing a backpack from a senior citizen at a local restaurant.

=According to SPPD Sgt. Cody Madison, the December 15 incident was reported to police about 5:51 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a theft that had just occurred at the Taco Bell, 535 W. Main St.

“The reporting party,” said Madison, “stated that two subjects, a male and a female had taken a backpack from the victim…”

The suspects, later identified as Jesus Castillo, 49, of Oxnard, and 38-year-old Sonia Hernandez of Santa Paula, were reported to be still on scene and in the restroom of the eatery.

When officers arrived both Castillo and Hernandez were contacted “after being pointed out by multiple witnesses on scene.”

Madison said the two were taken into custody for petty theft and conspiracy.

“All of the property was returned to the victim,” whom said Madison is not believed to have known the two and was unharmed in the encounter.

Both Castillo and Hernandez were transported to SPPD jail and later to Ventura County Main Jail for the charges of petty theft and conspiracy. Madison said Castillo’s bail is set at $90,000 and Hernandez’s bail is set at $50,000.
