John Robert “J.R.”  McGee 

John was born in Brownwood, Texas to Johnnie and Evelyn McGee and then lived in Chicago until his father returned from overseas during World War II. The family briefly lived in Big Spring, Texas before settling down in Carlsbad, New Mexico where John had some of the best memories of his life and always claimed it was the “greatest place to be raised.” John loved his childhood friends so much that he always stayed in touch and attended every class reunion with great anticipation. 

After college John supervised nine stores in Dallas until he was drafted into the army in 1966.

He served at Ramstein Airbase in Germany then volunteered for transfer to Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. 

In 1969 he married Gloria Roper and became the proud father to Chuck and Shawn. They were blessed with another daughter Jennifer Erin in 1971. 

John worked for Young’s Market for 34 years, as a salesman.

In 2003 he bought an 80 acre ranch in Oklahoma where he spent seven months each year. 

John loved traveling, white water rafting, golfing, cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, making his famous beef jerky, Wednesday nights with the “losers club” at Yolanda’s and baking all of his favorite recipes and passing them out to everyone he thought would enjoy them and sharing time with his family and friends. 

He is survived by son Chuck Roper (Bobbi) daughters Erin Dunehew (Jimmy), Shawn Roper and beloved stepdaughter Holly White.  12 grandchildren: Blair, Cody and Maddie Roper. Scooter, Corey and Riane Limon. Jordan, Brooke, Devyn and Blake Dunehew.   10 great-grandchildren: Sydney ,Owen and Blaze Roper, Ethan,Ravyn and Brooklyn Limon. Dylan Bańuelos, Bodie, Charlie and Callie White. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister JoAnn, He is survived by his siblings Jeanne (Kenneth) Force, Tom (Robin) McGee ,Janet Garmon, Wayne (Jacqueline) McGee, his nieces,nephews and most special best friend Jeanette Crawford. 

Celebration of Life will be at Mountain View golf course in Santa Paula on Thursday, September 17 from 4 to 8 PM.
