An apartment fire was reported Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of Ojai Road, but was extinguished within 10 minutes.

Santa Paula Fire Fighter and PIO Andy VanSciver said the September 6 incident was reported at 2:29 p.m. at a “Five unit, single-story apartment complex,” located on busy Ojai Santa Paula Road/Highway 159.

Santa Paula Fire units were on scene within a matter of minutes and found that one unit in the complex had a fire that apparently had started in the patio area and burned into the eaves of the structure.

“They’re not yet sure of the reason for the fire but it occurred on the patio and moved into the eaves but was mainly contained by firefighters to the outside…”

Structural damage was estimated at about $10,000.

The unit where the fire occurred was red-tagged. Four people living in the unit were displaced but VanSciver said they told first responders they would stay with relatives.

Fire crews from Fillmore City and Ventura County Fire departments also responded to the scene on mutual aid but the fire—first reported as being a water heater—was quickly extinguished.

VanSciver said the unit had working smoke detectors.

Traffic on Highway 150 experienced a brief slowdown until the fire was extinguished and equipment could be moved.
