A hot car fire in a carport near a building was quickly brought under control after Santa Paula Fire Department Firefighters responded to the incident that occurred not long after midnight Friday.

Twelve minutes elapsed from the time the incident was reported to the time the fire was out.

According to SPFD PIO Andy VanSciver, the July 24 incident was reported at 12:38 a.m. as a vehicle fire in a carport “close to a building” in the 300 block of South Steckel Drive.

SPFD Engines 81, 182 were dispatched as well as Battalion 81 and Battalion 5.

VanSciver said the dispatchers, “initially concerned about the possibility of the vehicle fire extending into the structure of the carport, dispatched the call as a structure response,” including mutual aid.

When SPFD Engines 182 and 81 arrived on scene six minutes after the initial report, SPFD Captain Jesse Philips said the engine compartment of a 1995 Geo Prism was found to be on fire.

VanSciver noted, “The crews from both engine companies were able to quickly extinguish the fire, containing the fire to the engine compartment,” and the blaze was reported knocked down at 12:50 a.m., six minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene.

The engine companies were released at 1:34 a.m.

“Ventura County Engine 126,” summoned to the fire as part of mutual aid, “was diverted from the vehicle fire to cover the city,” VanSciver added.

There were no injuries to the firefighters.
