A Santa Paula man was arrested Monday after police said he allegedly entered a Yale Street home, shoved the female resident who followed him outside and then took off with recyclables that were beside the residence.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Ken Clark the July 13 incident occurred shortly before 10:34 a.m. when police received a report of an attempted theft on the 200 block of Yale Court, located near Palm Avenue.

During the investigation, Clark said officers learned the 43-year-old victim “was inside her single-family residence when she heard the front door to her residence open,” and she “immediately confronted the suspect, who had run into the front yard.”

The suspect, identified as Shawn Noftsier, 22, of Santa Paula, “pushed the victim and ran past her while picking up the victim’s bags of recycles,” on the side of her residence and took off on foot.

When officers arrived, Noftsier was already out of sight.

But, said Clark, a witness in the area “followed the suspect” and Noftsier was “detained and arrested by officers a short distance from the residence.”

The victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

Noftsier, who was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was arrested on charges of suspicion of robbery and prowling.

Clark noted that apparently the door to the residence was unlocked and “people really have to be careful to keep their doors locked…”

And also to keep recyclables out of sight: “It’s not that recyclables are particularly valuable,” he said, “but that is the type of item that gets taken…it’s quick cash, very quick cash.”

Officers, added Clark, have contacted Noftsier in the past “in the middle of the night — collecting recyclables…”
