Three people were arrested Wednesday afternoon after a woman allegedly took a test drive of a vehicle from a Santa Paula car lot, picked up two others nearby and after driving around a while let the salesman go after threatening him.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Ken Clark the July 8 incident was reported at approximately 4:23 p.m. when officers dispatched to Martini’s Auto Sales, 801 E. Main St. were told there had been a “carjacking that just occurred…”

The reporting party told police “A female,” identified as Jaylene Mata, 18, of Fillmore, had gone to the car lot and requested to test drive a vehicle.

Once behind the wheel, Mata, accompanied by the salesman, drove off and then pulled over in the area of 11th and East Main streets where she picked up three males.

“The salesman from Martini Auto Sales heard what he believed to be someone chambering a round into a handgun from the back seat,” and Clark said, “One of the males in the back seat told the salesman to get out of the vehicle and threatened to kill him if he told anyone.”

When the salesman exited the vehicle the four subjects fled in the vehicle heading east on Main Street.

At about 4:41 p.m. officers spotted the vehicle traveling north on 8th street and a high-risk stop was conducted close to the intersection of 8th and Ventura streets.

Mata, who Clark said, “claims to be a gang member, was found to be driving the vehicle…”

She was arrested for suspicion of carjacking, intimidating a witness and conspiracy.

Passenger Guy Olvera, 35, of Santa Paula and a documented gang member, was found in the back seat of the vehicle and was also arrested on suspicion of carjacking, intimidating a witness and conspiracy.

“A second female identified as Raylene Juarez,” 28 of Santa Paula, was found in the passenger seat and Clark said she was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Clark said no other persons were found in the vehicle and both Olvera and Mata were transported to the Ventura County Jail.

Carjacking, said Police Chief Steve McLean, “Is a serious and violent crime…I’ve seen carjackings that have resulted in murder and I’ve also seen them result in a shootout with police.”

That the arrest came so quickly following the report of the crime did not surprise McLean.

“I’m so proud of these officers…in less than an hour they located that car and arrested the suspects.

The officers took violent subjects off the street; if they carjack one person they’ll carjack another and eventually,” noted McLean ”someone will get killed.”
