A Santa Paulan was among four people arrested early Thursday in connection with a car theft that occurred in Fillmore and resulted in an early morning pursuit that ended in the Oaks area of the city.

According to Ventura County Sheriff Detective John Fox on June 10 a Fillmore resident reported that her 1997 Saturn had been stolen that evening from her residence.

At approximately 4 a.m. June 11, “An alert Fillmore deputy spotted the stolen Saturn driving in the area of Highway 126 and Old Telegraph Road,” but when the officer attempted to stop the vehicle Fox reported the driver sped away.

The Saturn headed west and led deputies on a high-speed chase throughout the unincorporated and incorporated areas of Santa Paula where local police were notified of the chase.

After about 15 minutes the pursuit wound up in the Oaks in the northeast area of the city where the Saturn hit a curb near Woodland Drive and Laurel Road.

Deputies assisted by the SPPD took the four occupants of the vehicle into custody at gunpoint and Santa Paula Fire EMTs and an ambulance were summoned but no one was injured.

Arrested were Angelique Murillo, 18, Ashley Covarrubias, 18 and Guillermo Vargas, 21, all of Fillmore and 22-year-old Rudy Mora, a Santa Paula resident.

Fox noted that the four were charged with crimes including suspicion of

auto theft, felony evading, driving under the influence, participation in a criminal street gang, and being under the influence of controlled substances.

Mora, a documented gang member, has had contact in the past with Ventura County Sheriff’s and Santa Paula Police in both Fillmore and Santa Paula.
