Diplomas were awarded to 44 seniors at Renaissance High School in a Wednesday ceremony.

After the opening procession and introductions, Alma Valdovinos spoke to the full auditorium. She said, “We came here as children but we’re leaving as adults. It’s not enough to try and get by in life. You must try to excel in everything you do.” She also told her classmates to take steps no matter how small.

Renaissance Principal Dr. Robin Gillette noted that Renaissance had returned 20 students back to Santa Paula High School this year. She also said that many of the graduates were the first in their families to graduate from high school. And she added, many students went to school by day and had jobs at night. She also talked about how her students have given back to the community, volunteering with such things as the Rotary Club Haunted House.

Gillette noted that graduation has always been considered the gateway to the next chapter of one’s life. “It is time to come together and celebrate your success,” she added. She told the seniors that “This evening is your new beginning. Don’t stop here. Continue your quest for knowledge.”

Santa Paula Unified School District Superintendent Alfonso Gamino also spoke. He told the students that they had reached a milestone in their lives. “The fact that you are here tonight, proves that you have been successful,” he said. Gamino also told the graduates to take the opportunities they receive and learn from them.

He added, “Congratulations to the moms and dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles and everyone here,” he said. “The fact that you are in attendance tonight means that you have helped these students graduate.”

A number of the seniors received scholarships. They were presented by Latino Town Hall, Santa Paula Alumni Association, Santa Paula Education Foundation, Jerry Burns, Santa Paula Lions Club, Casa Del Mexicano and Santa Paula Police Chef Steve McLean.
