The California Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation into the death of a Santa Paula woman killed last week near El Rio, an accident that officials suspect could have been connected to alcohol.

Maria Perez Bravo, 29, died May 14 as a result from the crash that occurred on Vineyard Avenue south of Los Angeles Avenue about 4:25 p.m.

According to the CHP, Bravo’s vehicle was southbound on Vineyard Avenue in the left lane, when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle drifted over the double yellow lines. When Bravo’s vehicle entered the northbound traffic lane it struck an 85-year-old Fillmore woman’s vehicle, also traveling in the left lane. The Fillmore woman saw the vehicle coming toward her and had tried to take evasive action but was unable to in time to avoid a collision.

Ventura County Fire and ambulance EMTs responded to the scene and Bravo was pronounced dead by medical personnel. The unidentified Fillmore resident was taken to Ventura County Medical Center with a broken sternum.

Debris and evidence covered both northbound and southbound lanes of traffic, causing all area traffic to stop and closed the roadway until about 6:30 p.m. to clear the area and allow the CHP investigation.

In the interim traffic on Vineyard Avenue was redirected to eastbound Los Angeles Avenue and southbound Central Avenue.

The CHP noted that although the cause of the accident is under investigation there was an indication that Bravo might have been drinking alcohol.
