A teenage bicyclist suffered a broken arm in a collision with a vehicle Wednesday in Santa Paula near the high school.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Jeremy Watson the collision occurred about 7:45 a.m. in the 500 block of East Santa Paula Street.

Watson said a SPPD Officer drove up to the scene of the collision that “occurred moments prior to the officer’s arrival in the area.”

A witness as well as the unidentified driver of the vehicle told the investigating officer that the male juvenile bicyclist “suddenly turned left into the right side of the vehicle as it was traveling,” approximately 20 mph, “east on Santa Paula Street...”

Watson said the collision caused the bicycle rider to lose control and fall off the bicycle onto the street.

The force, noted Watson, “Caused the rider to suffer a broken arm.”

The juvenile, a Santa Paula High School student, was transported by ambulance to Santa Paula Hospital for treatment.

“Preliminarily, it appears the bicyclist was at fault for the collision,” said Watson, also the SPPD Traffic Investigator.

“The Santa Paula Police Department would like to remind all bicyclists that they are bound by the same rules of the road as a person driving a motor vehicle,” and those rules require “all persons under the age of 18 to wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet.”

The juvenile involved in the accident said Watson, “Was not wearing a helmet in this instance.”

School traffic safety and parking has long been a concern of residents living near Santa Paula High School.
