Santa Paula Police are investigating a series of shootings that occurred over the weekend that could be related, including one that featured a shot fired through a security door and the second involving a police perimeter around an area apartment building.

According to Santa Paula Police Sgt. Ken Clark, the first incident occurred Saturday, May 2 about 11:20 p.m., when the SPPD was notified that shots had been fired at a residence in the 200 block of South 11th Street.

The resident, according to Clark, told SPPD Officers that an “unknown person knocked on their door then fired a shot into the residence through the security screen door…”

A 35-year-old unidentified woman received a minor injury when shrapnel from the security door struck her.

Clark noted that no one else was injured during the incident and a suspect is still being sought.

About 9:25 p.m. Sunday, May 3, the SPPD was notified of gunfire at an apartment in the 300 block of South Steckel Drive.

“Numerous callers,” noted Clark, “reported either shots fired at or from the apartment,” and when SPPD Officers arrived on scene, a perimeter was set up around the apartment complex.

A witness told SPPD Officers that suspects kicked in a door at a home there and fired at least one round into the ceiling.

According to Clark, although “Evidence of a shooting was located in one of the apartments” several persons contacted by police “were somewhat uncooperative with the officers on scene.”

No one was injured and the apparent suspect or suspects had left the scene prior to the arrival of officers.

“Based on the MO the incidents appear to be related; there are a lot of similarities,” said SPPD Commander Ish Cordero, who noted the incidents also “appear to be a gang issue.”

Investigators have leads they are following, “And I thank the public for any tips they can provide to give us the information we need,” to find the suspects.
