The California Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that occurred early Thursday evening that left a Canoga Park resident dead after he was struck by a Santa Paula man’s BMW on Vineyard Avenue.

According to a CHP statement by Officer Rolando Tejeda, the collision occurred February 19 at about 6:45 p.m.

A 28-year-old Santa Paula man was driving a 1999 BMW south on Vineyard Avenue, south of Los Angeles Avenue/SR 118; the collision occurred between the communities of El Rio and Saticoy.

According to Tejeda, for an unknown reason Luis Polio, 42, of Canoga Park, crossed the street into traffic where he was struck by the right front of the BMW.

Polio was thrown onto the west shoulder of Vineyard Avenue.

Polio sustained “fatal injuries and succumbed to his injuries shortly after,” noted Tejeda

The driver of the BMW stopped at the scene; he did not receive any injuries as a result of the collision.

The stretch of roadway where the collision occurred is dark and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing; the driver of the vehicle told investigators he did not see the pedestrian until the last moment when it was too late to avoid striking him.

Southbound lanes of Vineyard Avenue were closed for approximately two hours for the on-scene investigation. The lanes were re-opened to traffic at approximately 9:05 p.m.

The collision is still under investigation.

Tejeda asked that anyone who witnessed or has information regarding the collision to contact the Ventura Area CHP office at (805) 477-4100.
