They are part of the organizing neighbors of the Craig Drive Posadas, a religious Mexican tradition, entering its 27th year in Santa Paula’s southwest. The local tradition was started in 1987 by founding neighbors Jose & Evangelina Berber, Margarita Reyes, Janice & Lee Marker, Jose Luis & Maria Boone Arana and Aurelia & Margarito Hernandez, who planed, organized and personally funded the 9 night event starting the 15th through the 23rd of December. The Posadas re-enact the travels of Mary and Joseph as they search for a place to stay in Bethlehem culminating in the birth of Jesus Christ. Upwards of 300 community members from throughout the county participate in the procession and partake in free gifts for the children, piñatas, games and various treats. Each household hosting the activity spends upwards of $700 per night. A live play is scheduled for the night of Dec. 20th. Contact Maria Boone Arana at 805-816-6351 for more information.
