Trustees Laura Phillips and Tim Hicks were all smiles when they took the Oath of Office at a recent Blanchard Community Library District meeting. Incumbent Phillips was appointed to the board a year ago to replace longtime Trustee Suzi Skutley, who passed away. She and Hicks - who is replacing longtime Trustee Brenda DeJamaer, who retired - automatically garnered the seats when no other candidates stepped forward for the November election.

Longtime Blanchard Community Library Trustee Brenda DeJamaer, who declined to run for another term governing the independent library, will be lauded for her dedication to books and those that read them at the board’s December 16 meeting.

DeJamaer was first elected to the BCL Board of Trustees in 2002; a school librarian who became the Santa Paula Elementary School District Library Educational Specialist, she is recognized for being a strong advocate of reading programs for children. She also has and continues to oversee the now-Santa Paula Unified School District’s annual Young Writers Contest that each year draws hundreds and hundreds of entries.

She had announced early on that due to family needs she would not seek a fourth, four-year term.

Incumbent Laura Phillips and newcomer Tim Hicks were recently sworn in as trustees of Blanchard Community Library, which celebrated its centennial in 2013. Both automatically garnered the seats in November when no other candidates emerged; Phillips was appointed to the library board in December 2013 to fill the seat held by longtime Trustee Suzi Skutley, who passed away in November.

Hicks and several other candidates had applied for Skutley’s seat when Phillips was selected on a 3-1 vote.

The December 16 meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at the library, 119 N. 8th St. where following public comment there will be a recognition of Xavier “Big X” Montes who has served the library for two decades.

The board will also recognize and thank DeJamaer for her 12 years of direct library service before taking a break for a reception.

Following the reception the board will go into closed session and then come out to address regular business.
