An Oxnard man on probation was arrested for stealing a bicycle from a local woman after he rode off and encountered several Santa Paula Police Officers.

According to Police Chief Steve McLean, the incident occurred Friday, November 14 at about 12:30 p.m.

McLean said Anthony Guerrero, 32 of Oxnard, “Steals a bike from a young lady and takes off riding it down the street... unfortunately, he didn’t anticipate that our gang detectives and patrol sergeant were in the area.”

When Guerrero saw police he tried to get away on the bike, “And was cut off by our very own Sgt. Jimmy Fogata.”

The suspect crashed the bicycle into a parked car and took off running but after a short foot pursuit by Detective Allen Macias, Guerrero was caught.

Sgt. Jimmy Fogata said Guerrero crashed between two cars when the wheel of the bicycle got caught in the wheel well of a parked SUV.

“When the tire got stuck he went face first into a side window, he hit so hard his feet went into the air,” and Fogata said when Guerrero again took off, “He didn’t get very far when he stumbled and an officer was able to catch him.”

The theft victim identified Guerrero as the man that had taken her bicycle in the 300 block of West Harvard Boulevard.

Guerrero was arrested for the theft of the bicycle and taken to Ventura County Jail, and said McLean, “The lady was pretty happy to get her bike back.”
