An area gang member was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of multiple crimes after a Santa Paula Police Officer stopped him for a traffic violation and found a weapon.

According to SPPD Sgt. Jeremy Watson the October 20 incident occurred at approximately 4:54 p.m.

“Officer David Keathley conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a red Nissan Pick-up in the area of Harvard Boulevard and 12th Street,” for a vehicle code violation.

During the officer’s contact with the driver, “known Santa Paula gang member, Alberto Perez,” 19, Watson said, “Officer Keathley located a firearm in the vehicle.

“Perez, who is on active Ventura County probation for narcotics violations, is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.”

Watson said that during a search of Perez and the vehicle, Keathley also recovered methamphetamine.

“Furthermore,” noted Watson, “it was determined Perez was driving without a valid California driver’s license.”

Keathley arrested Perez for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, simultaneous possession of a controlled substance and firearm, felony possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a loaded firearm in public, possession of a loaded firearm in public by a gang member, removal of mark or identification (serial number) from firearm, prohibited transfer/sale of a firearm, and driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed.

In September 2013, Perez was arrested on his birthday in a Ventura County Court on suspicion for a shooting incident unrelated to his court appearance.
