A Santa Paula man with an extensive criminal history was shot early Friday in Ventura, a crime that was only reported after he showed up at an Oxnard hospital seeking treatment.

According to a Ventura Police spokesman, reports of a shooting in the 1200 block of Prairie Lane were received September 26 at 3:03 a.m.

When VPD Officers responded to the scene, they found evidence of a shooting, but all the people reported to be involved in the incident were gone.

A short time later St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard reported they were treating Jacob Escobedo, 28, of Santa Paula for a gunshot wound. Escobedo underwent surgery for his injury and is expected to recover.

Ventura Police are still trying to determine the circumstances of the shooting, who was involved and a possible motive.

Santa Paula Police arrested Escobedo in June after he barricaded himself in a home for almost three hours, the third time Escobedo had been arrested from behind closed doors since 2010.

Escobedo had a felony post-release offender status warrant out for his arrest in connection with incidents involving child endangerment and felony resisting arrest.

Escobedo is a transient and parolee wanted that had been wanted on a number of charges from prior incidents; he also is a Post Release Offender who was in violation of his PROS status for child endangerment and felony resisting arrest.

At the time of his June arrest Santa Paula Police said Escobedo was considered armed and dangerous.

The investigation into the shooting of Escobedo, a documented gang member, is ongoing. Any witnesses or anyone with information related to this incident are urged to call the Ventura Police Department at (805) 339-4309.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and criminal complaint against the person(s) responsible for this crime. The caller may remain anonymous. The call is not recorded. Call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
