Santa Paula Unified School District board members took a tour of Santa Paula High School last week.

The board especially wanted to see the condition of  locker rooms in both the McMahon and Bryden Gymnasiums. District staff has recommended renovating both locker rooms. The girls’ locker room in the Bryden Gym is especially in need of renovating. The issue was discussed at a recent board meeting and several alternatives were raised, but the board delayed any decisions.

Superintendent Alfonso Gamino wants to relocate the campus security office from the Bryden Gym and move the PE teachers to that location. Staff also suggested possibly converting the weight room in the McMahon Gym to a girls’ locker room. One possibility that was raised is to move the weight room behind the Jones Field bleachers to the old maintenance building.

Board members looked at other parts of the school as well and visited a couple of classrooms. They also got a look at progress on construction of the new Science/Technology buildings. They are due to be completed by November 1. The original construction deadline was July. The contractor has penalties of $1,500 a day past the deadline.

The two three-story buildings are being built on 5th Street, across from the baseball field, where the old 500 buildings used to stand.

The facility will have 10 science labs, two computer labs, several preparation areas, two technology labs and a food services facility. The additional food services facility was added because of the limitations of the current facility.

On the south end of the project, at 5th Street and Santa Paula Street, there will be a parking area. The idea is to leave that space for a possible future administration building.
