There will be a meeting next week for affected residents to address the policies and guidelines of the new parking district in the designated neighborhoods surrounding Santa Paula High School.

The August 6 meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 970 E. Ventura St.

Interim Public Works Director Brian Yanez said the meeting is “For the residents within the district,” established by the City Council at a special meeting held July 28.

Parking issues had long plagued the neighborhoods surrounding the high school but recent construction that displaced a number of on campus parking spaces - and created the need for even more space due to the number of project workers - was the tipping point.

Residents complained of a lack of parking in front of their homes as well as blocked driveways and other traffic impacts, concerns brought to the City Council in December.

The established parking district will cover all of Palm Court (with the exception to possibly leave the area adjacent to the pool and in front of the stadium entrance open, no residences there); the north side of Santa Paula Street from Olive to Palm Court; the south side of Santa Paula Street from Olive to 6th Street; and the east side of 6th Street, from Santa Paula Street to Virginia Terrace.

There are approximately 69 residential dwellings in the new parking district whose occupants will be issued placards; the streets will also be dotted with signage denoting the new district policies.

Yanez said “We definitely want residents of the district to attend Wednesday’s meeting... what we’re trying to do is get their input on the policies and regulations regarding the dates, times and how the district will function.

“They are the ones that are going to have to live with it, and we have to have something that all can agree to and live with... “

The Santa Paula Traffic Safety Commission had offered options to the council regarding the parking issues and conducted a survey of residents, the majority of whom opted for the parking district.

Yanez said now the residents of the newly created district will need to “cross the i’s and dot the t’s on regulating the schedule... “
