An artist inspired by the Masters whose true love are ocean and water scenes is having a solo exhibit sponsored by the Santa Paula Society of the Arts.

Virginia Gunderson said various artworks by Ken Peterson are now on display at Blanchard Community Library on the Douglas Shively Memorial Wall.

The exhibit will continue through August 30 at the library, located at 119 N. 8th St.

Peterson is a longtime member of the SPSA who is “Always a willing worker when the annual Santa Paula Art and Photography Show is being produced and hung,” said Gunderson.

In addition, when asked, Peterson, “Always does interesting art demonstrations... he always prepares with an interesting theme and attendees go home with fresh and unique ideas to try.”

Gunderson said she expects Peterson’s exhibit “Will be varied, reflecting his many interests... “

A native of Chicago, Peterson developed an interest in art at an early age.  Marine subjects from Chicago’s lakefront and various marinas became his favorite subjects and relocating to Ventura in 1975 provided him the opportunity to continue painting and attending workshops and classes.

He loved his new home and its impact on his art that fueled his intent, “to produce a realistic representation of the subject matter emphasizing the movement, light and mood of the sea and surrounding atmosphere.”

Peterson attended the Art Institute of Chicago, received an AA degree from Ventura College and bachelor’s degree from the University of Laverne. His paintings have been exhibited in the Ventura County Fair, Ojai Art and Music Festival, private businesses and others.

Peterson, a longtime member of the SPSA, has studied extensively, but it was while visiting France and Italy that “I discovered so much more in the art world, especially after viewing the paintings of the Master artists.” And Peterson had more opportunities to view the art of the Masters through his continued European visits.

Peterson’s art may be viewed during regular library business hours Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Blanchard Community Library is closed Friday, Sunday and holidays.

The Depot Gallery is located at the corner of 10th and Santa Barbara streets inside the historic Depot. It is also home to the Santa Paula Society of the Arts Gift Shop, which offers large and small paintings, greeting cards, arts and crafts and other items made by SPSA artist members.

The Depot Gallery and Gift Shop is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information call the SPSA at 525-1104.
