By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula Times Santa Paula residents that strive to be water wise and save money as well as the environment took advantage of two free programs recently offered at the Community Center.

Free mulch and free showerheads were given away March 22, a program sponsored by the City of Santa Paula and Crown Disposal Inc., and one according to Interim Public Works Director Brian Yanez that was the first for the city.

Cindy Madrigal, senior administration assistant for the city’s Public Works department, was handing out the showerheads at the drive-thru event where Santa Paulans had to show proof of city residency.

Just a few hours into the event Madrigal said she had given away 78 showerheads.

“It’s really going well,” she noted and the Crown Disposal mulch was especially popular: “We’ve had people coming back again and again,” for the environmentally friendly groundcover, which helps retain moisture and cuts back on watering needs for landscaping.

Following the event Yanez said he was pleased at the turnout.

“I thought it went well. We had just a little over a hundred residents and they all had good comments regarding the event,” that Yanez anticipates will be repeated.

“I would say yes that we will do it again,” he noted.

Although the 12 tons of mulch donated by Crown Disposal was depleted, the city still has about 200 Niagara Conservation Corporation low-flow, on-and-off buttoned showerheads.

The city is offering the showerheads and mulch to help residents conserve water during a drought so severe that it prompted a declaration of disaster by Governor Jerry Brown.

In recent weeks the city declared they would conserve water and asked that the public also make the effort to cut water use by at least 15 percent.
