By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula Times An 18-year-old Santa Paula girl died as a result of injuries she suffered March 19 in a single-vehicle accident on Foothill Road, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.
CHP Officer Steve Reid said Blanca Montiel was driving westbound on Foothill Road, just west of Aliso Canyon Road at 11:45 p.m. when-for an unknown reason-she lost control of the 2000 Chevrolet sedan.
Reid said, “Her vehicle drifted over to the right shoulder, spun out and the front end collided with a ditch... the left side of the vehicle collided with a power pole.” Montiel was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The injured Montiel was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where she expired the next morning.
According to Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Armando Chavez, Montiel passed March 20 at 7:44 a.m. at VCMC.
He said the autopsy showed the cause of death was “multiple blunt force injuries... “
Known for her long hair, happy smile and orthodontic braces she was not shy to show off, Montiel was to graduate from Santa Paula High School in June; she had been employed as a cashier for Carl’s Jr. since December 2012.
In 2006, as a young student at McKevett Elementary School, Montiel placed third in a Rotary Club of Santa Paula essay contest and received a $50 savings bond. Montiel also played on a Santa Paula Youth Basketball championship team.
Her friends have rallied around the Montiel family, holding a carwash Sunday to help with funeral expenses; other events are being planned.
A memorial has been placed where the accident occurred.
Services are pending.
