An off-duty Santa Paula Police Detective wound up witnessing a solo Highway 126 accident and detaining an Oxnard man suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
According to SPPD Sgt. Cody Madison, the incident occurred Tuesday, October 1 at about 8:30 p.m. when, “An off-duty SPPD detective was driving westbound on the 126 freeway west of Briggs Road when he observed a vehicle approaching from behind at a high rate of speed.”
The vehicle passed off-duty Detective Paul Spencer in the dirt center median and noted Madison, “As the vehicle re-entered onto the freeway it lost control resulting in a solo vehicle accident.”
Spencer then made contact with the occupants of the vehicle. The driver, Marcos Hinojosa, 21, of Oxnard, “responded to officer commands to lie on the ground,” however, the passenger attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle that was just involved in the accident.
Madison noted that the vehicle was so badly damaged it was “un-drivable” and the passenger jumped out and fled northbound across the dirt field.
A search of the field failed to find the suspect.
Madison said Hinojosa was found to be intoxicated “with a blood alcohol lever of .18 BAC, which is twice the legal limit.”
Hinojosa was later transported to Ventura County Main Jail for a DUI.
Anyone who witnessed this event is asked to contact Detective Spencer at 525-4474 x 221.
