Local residents Sharon and Jerry Mittelholtz have joined in what has become a worldwide movement and opened a Little Free Library in front of their home at 608 Shasta Drive. The white with red trim library box built by Jerry offers members of the community a place to take a book or leave a book, welcoming participation from all in maintaining a supply of books for all to share.

The Little Free Library started as a tribute to Wisconsin resident Todd Bol’s mother, a teacher and bibliophile. His library box became a gathering spot for his neighbors, and then a friend in Madison put out some similar boxes and got the same reaction. Now folks all over the world can start their own, by going to the website, www.littlefreelibrary.org.

The mission of the Little Free Library, as stated on their website, is:

• To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.

• To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity, and wisdom across generations.

•    To build more than 2,510 libraries around the world – more than Andrew Carnegie – and then more.

The Mittelholtz family is sharing their love of reading and books with Santa Paula. They even built a second library box for their daughter in Alameda. So stop by and borrow a book or leave a book and be part of this worldwide celebration of the joy of reading.
