Santa Paula Fire Department: Smoke but no fire at Carl’s Jr. drive-thru

It was smoke but no fire when Santa Paula Fire and personnel from additional agencies were dispatched early Saturday to a report of a structure fire at a drive-thru restaurant, but the source of the smoke could not be determined.
According to SPFD Captain Steve Lazenby, the incident was reported January 7 at 6:43 a.m. when a report was received that a structure fire was at the Carl’s Jr. drive-thru restaurant, located at 230 E. Harvard Boulevard at the corner of Palm Avenue. Also dispatched were Santa Paula Police personnel and firefighting engine companies from the Ventura County Fire Department.
“Upon arrival the building was clear,” but, Lazenby said, “employees reported that during normal start up operations the kitchen area had filled with light smoke.”
Public safety personnel checked the interior of the restaurant and the roof, but they were unable to locate a smoke source. At that point all but one fire engine were released from the scene and the balance of the responding units were cancelled.
“The entire building was checked with the thermal image camera and nothing was found,” and Lazenby said security surveillance tapes were examined. The security recordings showed that although light smoke had built up in the kitchen, it quickly dissipated.
Lazenby said the Carl’s Jr. manager was advised to have the heating and air conditional checked by a professional, and to call 911 if the problem returned.
