Rootin’-tootin’ time at Saturday’s Hospice Western Casino Nite

You can kick up your heels at Saturday’s Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group Western Casino Nite using complimentary transportation, just another of the fun aspects of this rootin’-tootin’ fundraiser.

According to Cathy Barringer, a founder of the nonprofit SCVHHSG, “Santa Paula Chevrolet is offering transportation to and from the party if anyone desires this service, just the latest example of the wonderful support the dealership and John Macik consistently offer Hospice.” In addition, the Hospice Van, which offers free transportation for medical appointments and is fully handicapped accessible, is also offering rides for Western Casino Night.

The transportation options are just an example of how everyone is a winner at the Western Casino Night, and the 5th annual celebration will again be held at the historic Glen Tavern Inn. The June 18 party starts at 5 p.m. at the Inn, 134 N. Mill Street.

Tickets include Western-style hors d’ouvres, one drink, BBQ Dinner prepared by Enzo’s, Laird’s and Wood Ranch BBQ, a raffle ticket, $75 in fun money, and live entertainment by Studio C. Gaming begins at 5:45 with celebrity dealers. There will also be a Silent Auction and the opportunity to win a real destination gambling vacation.

And don’t forgot - the more you win, the more you have a chance to win the wonderful raffle items. There will be plenty of additional fun money for purchase to replenish your gambling chips as you face off with Lady Luck.

Tickets are only $50 in advance and $65 at the door. Cocktails and dining will be on the wide-open spaces outside the Inn, where guests - who can dress Western theme or just informally - can socialize before they start gambling the night away.

A Western Casino Nite tradition is the standup cardboard characters offered as a raffle prize, and this year Barringer said there will be two: Johnny Depp as “The Pirates of the Caribbean” Captain Jack Sparrow, and James Dean as, well, James Dean.

Other celebrities of the more lively variety will be dealers, including Mayor Fred Robinson, Police Chief Steve MacKinnon, Santa Paula Times’ Don Johnson, Supervisor Kathy Long and Limoneira’s John Chamberlain, as well as professionals from Aces & 8’s, the casino operator, which will set up in the lobby and Inn’s banquet room. Gaming will start at 5:45 p.m., although selected tables will open at 5:30 p.m.

Gamblers will use their fun “money” to try their luck at Texas Hold’em Poker, Black Jack, Craps and Roulette. More gambling “money” will be available for purchase by those who are still trying to meet up with Lady Luck, and winnings will be exchanged for raffle tickets for the variety of prizes.

“We’ll also have a Wheel of Fortune” and, Barringer promised, “The evening will have a lot of wonderful things to offer for those who don’t gamble. People can come to enjoy good dinner, good music and good friends.”

Tickets are available at the Santa Paula Times, 944 E. Main St.; Brownie’s Basement, 866 E. Main St.; Santa Paula Health & Fitness, 847 E. Main St.; Glen Tavern Inn, 134 N. Mill St.; and the Chamber of Commerce at Santa Barbara and 10th streets. In Ventura you can find tickets at Lautzenhiser’s Hallmark, 1730 S. Victoria Ave., and in Fillmore at Star Mim and Up in Arms.

All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Santa Clara Valley Hospice/Home Support Group. Call 525-1333 or 525-7985 for more information about the event and the complimentary transportation.
