Bertha Vargas Lozano

Bertha Vargas Lozano, in the loving company of her children, passed away to God’s golden shores on May 11, 2010.

Bertha was born in the city of Juarez in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. She was raised in the time of oil lanterns and no electricity or running water.

At a young age she lost her mother and was pulled from school to help raise her siblings. This was a crushing blow to her dream of a higher education, but didn’t dampen the love she had for life.

Bertha was a free spirit who enjoyed riding horses bareback and was not afraid to embark on new adventures. This free spirit led her to seek a better life for her and her son in California.

She met and married Rutilio Lozano and found in him someone to pursue her dreams with. She worked alongside him in agricultural fields throughout the state of California as a laborer and packinghouse worker.

Eventually they settled down in Limoneira Ranch, where they found a friendly community in which to raise their growing family, which now included a total of three sons and one daughter. They moved to Santa Paula in 1976, where Bertha began caring for the elderly in her home and continued doing so for 15 years.

Bertha was a strong and determined individual. She was also very caring and charismatic, making lifelong friends everywhere she went. She will be missed, but her sense of humor and love of life remain in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her sons, Ernesto Peñaloza (wife Blanca) and Armando Lozano (wife Jackie); daughter Irma Lozano; grandchildren, Rosana, Ricky, Corina (husband John), Matthew, Sarah, Giselle, and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren Damian and Daisy.

Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, phone 525-3391.
