A Santa Paula juvenile gang member well known to police was arrested last week after allegedly battering two police officers and a K-9 following an investigation into attempted vehicle burglaries.
According to Santa Paula Police Lieutenant Troyce Reynolds, the incident occurred Friday, November 6 at approximately 7 p.m. when the SPPD received a report of trespassing/suspicious circumstances in the 600 block of North Oak Street. The person who called in the report said they observed several subjects entering a nearby resident’s garage.
Upon officers’ arrival it was found the occupant of the house was unaware of the incident, but other residents in the area flagged officers down and reported they observed several suspects attempting to burglarize their vehicles. While officers checked the area, another 9-1-1 call was received from a resident who reported that the subjects were in the backyard but had jumped the fence fleeing east.
Armed with descriptions of the subjects, officers began checking the area; SPPD Officer Tim Halloran observed one of the suspects and attempted to stop him, but he fled on foot and ran between two residences. Officers set up a square block perimeter to contain the subject, and a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department K-9 assisted with the search of the area.
At about 8 p.m. while checking backyards, SPPD Sergeant Ryan Smith and Officer Halloran located the subject hiding in a bush, and he attempted to flee. The suspect, a 17-year-old resident of Santa Paula, was caught, but fought and battered the officers and the K-9 before he was restrained and placed under arrest.
The officers and the suspect were treated for minor injuries - scrapes and abrasions resulting from the suspect resisting arrest - and released from Santa Paula Hospital.
The juvenile, whose name cannot be released due to his age, is a well-known Santa Paula gang member who, according to a SPPD spokesman, is on active probation. He was transported to Ventura County Juvenile Hall and booked on suspicion of various charges including resisting arrest and battery on a peace officer.
