Santa Paula Police are investigating a September 20 attack on an area woman that left her lying on a residential area sidewalk with a serious head injury.

According to SPPD Lieutenant Troyce Reynolds, the report of a person down on the 300 block of North Mill Street was received that Sunday at about 12:30 a.m. Upon arrival, SPPD officers found a female subject unconscious on a sidewalk bleeding, profusely from what appeared to be a life-threatening head injury.

Santa Paula Fire Department EMTs and AMR ambulance paramedics treated the woman, Naomi Marrufo, 19, of Santa Paula, on scene before she was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center Head Trauma Unit. Reynolds said Marrufo was “unable to assist in the investigation due to her injury,” which proved to be “less serious” than initially thought.

Police Chief Steve MacKinnon said SPPD investigators believe the attack occurred “in the immediate vicinity of the location” where Marrufo was found, and it appears “she was struck just one time with an unknown object.” MacKinnon noted Marrufo was under the influence of “alcohol and/or drugs at the time.” The SPPD, he added, “is familiar with the victim from past contacts.”

The investigation into the attack is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Santa Paula Police Department Investigations Unit, 525-4474. If the caller would prefer to remain anonymous, they can call the SPPD recorded Tip Hotline, 933-4253-1-#.

Those with information can also call Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477). Callers remain anonymous and can collect a $1,000 reward if information offered results in an arrest.
