The Brain Injury Center of Ventura County is making it a priority to reach people with a brain injury and their families in Santa Paula. Letters are going out to medical facilities, service organizations, churches and schools in the community explaining what BIC does and inviting any people who need help to make contact.
“We’ve had some interaction with Santa Paula residents, but there are many more people who can benefit from our services,” said Joan Moore, the organization’s director. The Brain Injury Center is a 15-year-old non-profit organization that provides resource facilitation through information, referrals, education and advocacy for adults living with acquired and traumatic brain injury. BIC also strives to raise public awareness about the needs, struggles, rights and responsibilities of the brain injury community.
A speaking program targets community groups throughout the county for presentations about brain injury and its impact on individuals and families. Typically these presentations feature Moore or a Board member and one or more individuals who have a brain injury, telling what it is like to live with this significant disability. “We’re hoping to be invited to groups in Santa Paula to provide this important educational service,” Moore said. “Our programs are interesting and extremely compelling and our message can really help people.”
BIC conducts two weekly support groups in Ventura, one for brain injury survivors and a separate support group for family, friends and caretakers of brain injury survivors. The location is Bible Fellowship Church, 6950 Ralston, Building 300, at the corner of Ralston Avenue and Johnston Drive in Ventura. The groups run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The groups are free and open to any county residents.
The non-profit group also conducts identical support groups in Camarillo on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, also from 4 to 5:30 p.m., within the Camarillo Health Care District’s offices at 3639 E. Las Posas Road.
Both groups are facilitated by a certified rehabilitation counselor and others uniquely familiar with the challenges of living with brain injury. Important topics concerning adjusting to life after a brain injury are covered and group discussions allow participants to raise subjects of individual concern.
