To celebrate the third anniversary of the return of the Santa Clara River Valley’s only hospital, a special Health Fair will be held Saturday, July 11. Santa Paula Hospital’s 3rd Anniversary Community Health Fair will be held on the grounds of the “Hospital on the Hill,” located at 825 N. 10th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Open to all residents of Ventura County, the anniversary celebration and health fair will offer a variety of entertaining and educational booths of interest to all ages. Domino’s Pizza, as well as barbequed hot dogs, will be available, but first you might want to take advantage of Ventura County Public Health Agency staff’s offer of testing of cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, liver function and more, all at no cost.

Taking advantage of all the testing that will be available can be compared to getting a mini-physical examination for free. The county’s Mobile Mammography Unit will be available for those making appointments in advance (call 677-5202 to make arrangements).

Children will be encouraged to visit the petting zoo, and for those between the ages of 4 and10 years old there will be an obstacle course to test agility and encourage the importance of physical fitness while at the same time the children are having fun. There will be a special Reading Circle and face painting also for the kids.

“Santa Paula Hospital’s commitment to the community has been felt at many events in the Santa Clara Valley over the past three years,” said Sheila Murphy, VCHCA marketing director. “The hospital staff hopes that everyone will turn out for this fun-filled day, on the lawn of the beautiful ‘Hospital on the Hill.’ “

The then Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, only one of three such facilities build entirely by community donations, closed December 19, 2003 after more than 40 years of community service. Hospital trustees filed for bankruptcy three days later.

After a strong community effort that included the efforts of the City Council, City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz and City Attorney Karl Berger as well as County Supervisor Kathy Long, Ventura County Medical Center purchased the facility as a satellite campus. The hospital, which serves more than 50,000 River Valley residents, underwent an ambitious renovation and was reopened in July 2006.
