By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesArtists from throughout the western states are hoping their works will make the artistic cut and be featured in the upcoming 72nd Annual Santa Paula Art & Photography Show, which will open March 10. The exhibit and art competition will be displayed at Blanchard Community Library through April 1.The Artists Reception and presentations of awards for the Santa Paula Society of the Arts-sponsored event will be held at the library on March 21 from 4 to 7 p.m., and feature acclaimed artist and harpist Xavier Montes.Entries are hung in categories of Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Photography, Mixed Media and Pastels. All of the works are for sale, and the selection is reasonably priced for those who prefer original art in a varied selection of medias and subjects.According to SPSA Publicity Chair Virginia Gunderson, $4,750 in prizes were awarded last year. The SPSA show is the oldest such juried event in the state, and this year jurors will include Johanna Steel, Glenna Kurtz and Laura Long (who will judge Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Mixed Media/Graphics and Pastels), and Christopher Azarnay (Photography). The exhibit also features the unique Jury of Your Peers Award, decided by participating artists, as well as the Peoples Choice Award, garnered by public vote. Gunderson said the balloting in both categories will end promptly on March 21 at 5 p.m., an earlier deadline than previous years. The combination of votes by the judges, artists and the public determine the Best in Show Award, this year sponsored by the Santa Paula Society of the Arts. The awards ceremony will start at 6 p.m.
“The prospectus,” said Gunderson, “has been sent to those who participated in the show in the recent past, but new artists can get on the mailing list by calling our number,” 805-525-1104, “to leave their name, address, and phone number.” Gunderson stressed that in today’s hurry up world, callers are asked to “slowly” repeat their phone number a second time to ensure the message garners a return call. The prospectus will also be available at the Camarillo Art Center and the Buenaventura Art Association, as well as in Santa Paula at John Nichols Gallery (916 E. Main St.) and Blanchard Community Library (119 N. 8th St.). Entry forms can also be downloaded from the society’s website: thespsa.com.Entries will be accepted at the north side of Blanchard Memorial Library on Thursday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gunderson said artists must follow the guidelines listed on the prospectus regarding hanging wire, size, category and days of entries.Major prize donors include the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, North Wind Studios, Santa Paula Community Bank, Limoneira, Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce, City of Santa Paula, and many others.
