Airplane runs off runway at Santa Paula Airport, no injuries

By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesA student pilot escaped injury Wednesday when the small Cessna he was flying ran off the runway at Santa Paula Airport and hit a chain link fence. According to Santa Paula Police Sergeant Ryan Smith, the incident was reported at about 12:21 p.m. on January 21.SPPD officers responded to the call that a “plane had crashed at the east end of the runway,” and upon arrival, noted Smith, “officers did find a plane in the process of landing west to east had slid off the end of the runway and into a chain link fence.” Santa Paula Fire Department personnel also responded, but the student pilot, who was alone in the Cessna 182, was not injured.The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating incident.
The pilot, a 49-year-old resident of Camarillo, apparently took off from Santa Paula Airport and was returning when the accident occurred. The plane, which appeared to sustain minor damage, is registered to a Camarillo leasing company.Ryan said the airport runway was “shut down for about 15 minutes at the direction of the FAA for the runway to be cleared,” and then was reopened to air traffic.
