Investigators were told the shooters might have left the area in a brown sedan, possibly a Nissan or Toyota.Acevedo had been shot in the arm and chest in October during one of a series of drive-by shootings that have plagued Saticoy. Reportedly his relatives believe Acevedo - a Buena High School dropout - may have been targeted because of his Saticoy connections. There was no information available on how long Acevedo had been a resident of Santa Paula.Family members said someone at the shooting yelled a reference to a Saticoy housing project known for its gang activity. The house where Acevedo was shot is a few blocks from Cabrillo Village, a former farm labor camp.There is a history of violence between rival gangs in Ventura’s Cabrillo Village and unincorporated Saticoy, where Acevedo grew up, and residents of the his former neighborhood have reported a recent rise in gang graffiti.

A Santa Paula resident was shot and killed late Friday in East Ventura, the second time in recent months the man had been targeted by violence.

Ventura Police and Ventura County Sheriff’s investigators suspect that the shooting of Richard Acevedo, 21, was gang-related.The shooting occurred at about 4:15 p.m. on December 19 outside Acevedo’s great-grandparents’ home in the 1200 block of Mead Avenue in an unincorporated area of Saticoy. Acevedo was a former resident of the house, which was occupied at the time of the shooting.A witness told police that at least five shots were fired. No one else was injured by gunfire.After he was shot in the upper torso, Acevedo crawled back inside the house. Acevedo underwent emergency surgery and was pronounced dead at Ventura County Medical Center, where he had been transported after being treated on scene by emergency responders.
