On Saturday, November 8th at 7:30 p.m., the fifth season of the Universalist Unitarian Church’s popular Santa Paula Concert Series will conclude in a concert entitled “Tree of Strings IV – Lori Andrews, Jazz Harpist.”

On Saturday, November 8th at 7:30 p.m., the fifth season of the Universalist Unitarian Church’s popular Santa Paula Concert Series will conclude in a concert entitled “Tree of Strings IV – Lori Andrews, Jazz Harpist.” The annual harp concert has become a staple of the Series, and has featured harpists of several harp traditions, including Paraguayan, Mexican, Celtic and avant-garde electric harp.

This year’s concert is a very special one, featuring pedal harpist Lori Andrews in a varied program of jazz on the pedal harp. Ms. Andrews will perform on both acoustic as well as electric pedal harps.

Lori Andrews is a gifted and energetic performer who takes the harp beyond tradition and into the elements of jazz, fusion and R&B. Having seven CDs to her credit, she has performed for Presidents Clinton and Ford, and the King and Queen of Spain, and has entertained a list of celebrities including Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Oprah Winfrey (50th birthday) and Clint Eastwood.

Winner of the Jazziz Readers poll as best harpist, Lori’s band has been featured at various jazz festivals including Playboy, Long Beach, Newport Beach, Sacramento and Idyllwild. Backing entertainers such as Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt, Ashley Judd, Anne Heche, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner and Charlize Theron, the Lori Andrews JazHarp Quartet is the house band every year at the Academy Awards Technical Achievement Division, which is the evening that the first Oscar Award is given, playing award recipients on and off the stage.

Lori’s TV and movie appearances include ‘Beaches’, ‘In the Line of Fire’, ‘The Tonight Show’, ‘Mambo Kings’, ‘Drew Carey’, ‘Ally McBeal’ and ‘MAD TV’. She is truly a world-class artist, and this concert promises to be one of the most memorable to date.

The concert will open with Chucumite performing the bright and animated Son Jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico. Chucumite consists of Santa Paula native John Robles and Santa Barbara resident Robert Perales playing jarana, a rhythmic guitar-type instrument.

The concert will be presented in the beautiful sanctuary of the Universalist Unitarian Church, which was built in 1892. The church is located at 740 E. Main St., Santa Paula.

Donation is $15, with an artist’s reception to follow. Tickets may be purchased at John Nichols Gallery, 916 E. Main St., or at the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce, 200 N. 10th Street. Reservations may also be made by calling the Church at 525-4647.
