Howard Bolton, the graphic artist who created Santa Paula’s entry in a unique Ventura County Fair-based contest, was recognized for his contribution of time and talent by the City Council at the July 28 meeting.

Bolton created the newspaper rack art for the unique contest sponsored by the Ventura County Star, and City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz showed that the Discover Santa Paula/Santa Paula California Oil Museum entry is indeed dazzling. The entry was one of just a dozen selected from more than 60 entries countywide to compete in the contest.

“The beautiful part of this” is that fair visitors will vote for their favorite entry, using change that Bobkiewicz said in turn would support the Santa Paula California Oil Museum. The rack features photos and artwork that can be viewed on the Discover Santa Paula website, which offers peeks at city attractions, landmarks and places to visit.

“Howard took on this assignment after a phone call,” and, noted Bobkiewicz, refused payment for his services. SPCOM General Manager Jeanne Orcutt also warrants thanks for assisting Bolton in the creation of the newspaper rack and, Bobkiewicz added, “Mayor Bob Gonzales thought it was appropriate for Howard to receive this recognition.”

“This is the first ever recognition of a Discover Santa Paula newsstand artist,” joked Gonzales as he presented the proclamation to Bolton, a longtime Santa Paula resident and artist. In the 1990s, Bolton was honored as the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for his volunteer efforts on behalf of the community. “Where there’s a need,” noted Gonzales, “Howard always steps up.”
