City Councilmen Ray Luna and John Procter and City Clerk Josie Guzman Herrera have decided not to run for reelection, and so far there have been an equal number of potential takers for the positions. Luna and Procter have served on the Council for two four-year terms.
Procter had pulled nomination papers, but said later he will not seek a third term. Luna has also stated that this is his last term on the Council.
Fred Robinson and Jim Tovias have pulled City Council nomination papers and Tovias has filed, Deputy City Clerk Lorena Alvarez said Wednesday. Judy Rice has taken out papers for the city clerk position. Since the incumbent councilmen and city clerk are not running for reelection, the filing deadline for both offices will be extended until Wednesday, August 13 at 5 p.m.
Josie Guzman Herrera, formerly executive assistant to City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz, is now the deputy city clerk of Ventura, a job she also held for years in Santa Paula before she ran for city clerk. Herrera, who has been in the city clerk post for one four-year term, said she is not running for reelection, stating, “My reason is simply that I need to concentrate on my career.”
Herrera anticipates “receiving my designation as a certified municipal clerk in a few weeks. My four years as the elected city clerk were very rewarding, and it is with a heavy heart that I made the decision not to run for reelection.” Herrera plans to remain in Santa Paula as well as “volunteering my services to the city and the community.”
Alvarez said that City Treasurer Sandy Easley has returned the nomination paperwork to run for her third term.
