Donald Ancel Borad

Don Board, 74, died peacefully at home on Sunday, July 6, 2008 after a ten-month battle with metastatic melanoma.

Don Borad was born on October 19, 1933 to Jack and Dora Borad in Chicago, Illinois. His only siblings were his half-brother, Martin Borad, and his half-sister, Sybil Basse, both deceased.

Don Borad is survived by his wife of 20 years, June Hopkins; his children, Ellen Borad and Gary Borad (wife Janette Lima); his stepchildren, Susan Rosenblum (husband Brad) and Eric Hopkins (partner Auburn Hensley); his grandchildren, Jamie and Kristie Borad; and former wife, Gail Borad.

Don was a software engineer for many years, and then at age 57 he changed careers to become a psychotherapist. At age 70, Don achieved a Doctorate of Psychology degree.

Don led an extremely active life and had even planned to tour Mont-Blanc in France this year had his illness not interceded. He was a great outdoors and sports enthusiast. His hobbies included backpacking, trailblazing, running and cycling. He was also a Little League coach, and a Girl Scout troop and Explorer Post leader.

He was a remarkable individual whose varied and significant contributions greatly enriched the lives of others. His many achievements include an award from the District Attorney’s Office for outstanding service and dedication to victims of crime, a certificate of appreciation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for his contribution to the trails program on the Ojai Ranger District, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the completion of a trail to the top of Topa Topa Bluff, which is now referred to by friends as “The Don Borad Memorial Trail.”

Don will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched, and will be remembered for his passion for helping others, his zest for life, and quirky sense of humor.

A gathering to celebrate Don’s life will be held later this year. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Los Padres National Forest in his memory.

Many thanks to Dr. Chang, Dr. Rodnick and Dr. Wikholm for their excellent care of Don during his battle with metastatic melanoma.

Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.

Fred G.Mandes

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred G. Mandes, 88, our beloved dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend and hero, on July 12, 2008. Though broken hearted, our minds are eased by knowing he peacefully passed with family at his side.

Fred was born February 22, 1920 in Lompoc, California, where his mother and father settled, coming from the Azores in the late 1800’s. After his father’s passing when Fred was only 9, his mother raised him in the Los Alamos Valley, alongside his three brothers and his two sisters. Fred graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1939 and then went to work for Purity Stores in San Luis Obispo. In 1942 Fred joined the Army and became a member of the 101st Airborne Division. As a Tech. Sergeant he served in Hawaii, the Guadalcanal and also in New Britain. He made two beachhead landings in the Philippines and served in the Korea Army of Occupation in Korea. Fred was very patriotic and proud of his military service and left the army with an Honorable Discharge in 1945. Once home, Fred began his 38 year career with the Union Oil Company in Santa Maria and eventually relocated to Santa Paula where he retired as a Pipeline Division Foreman. Fred enjoyed his retirement spending time with family and friends. He will be deeply missed and will always be remembered for his straight-forwardness, honesty, and integrity. He truly loved his family.

Fred was preceded in death by his first wife Grace, his second wife, Leuna, his three brothers, Joaquin, Ernest and Louis Mandes, a sister Mary Silva and his beloved miniature schnauzer Peewee.

Fred leaves behind a large family, both of blood and by marriage. He is survived by sons, John Mandes, Michael Cunningham and his wife Yanhua Wang, Terry Cunningham; Daughters, Marilyn and her husband Donald Risner, Sherrie and her husband Don Thigpin; Grandchildren, James and his wife Debbie Gutierrez, Lisa and her husband Cory Larsen, Steven Densen, Michael Densen, Terri and her husband Jason Alurcon, Tracy and her husband Ryan Poynter, Erica Cunningham and Levi Cunningham; and 9 Great-Grandchildren. He also leaves his sister, Rita Sumner and numerous nieces and nephews.

All family and friends are welcome to join us for his graveside Memorial service, which will include full military honors, on Friday, July 18 at 10:00am at Santa Paula Cemetery. A private viewing will be held for family members only.

Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin Carroll Mortuary, 738 E. Santa Paula St., Santa Paula, 525-3391.
