By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesToday is his last official day on the job, but on Tuesday the Chamber of Commerce honored Santa Paula Police Lieutenant Mike Saviers as the Public Safety Officer of the Month at Good Morning Santa Paula. The Chamber-sponsored event was held at Logsdon’s at the Santa Paula Airport.“First of all let me intro Lt. Mike Saviers for those few who possibly couldn’t know,” joked Police Chief Steve MacKinnon. Among the reasons that Saviers was selected for the Public Safety Officer of the Month award is that “he is finishing up his career Friday, his last day... I want to make you aware of what a fantastic job he has done” since initially joining the SPPD in 1975 as a reserve officer. The 33-year SPPD veteran was sworn in as a regular officer in “August 1979, the same month and year I started my career,” among several career parallels MacKinnon said he has discovered. “Since 1979 Lt. Saviers’ really had an incredible career... I was going through his file and found a continuous flow, a countless number of letters of commendation” from former SPPD chiefs as well as from top officials of other law enforcement agencies. Also found, MacKinnon added, were “an enormous amount of letters from the community,” noting Saviers’ help and stellar service.Saviers has held his current position for “going on three years... before that he was the keystone of the office” as sergeant and watch commander, “mentoring new officers and keeping the city safe at night. Lt. Saviers is admired by many officers,” and although the recruitment is now in process, “it will be difficult to choose his replacement.... I also want to express all my appreciation of how supportive Lt. Saviers has been of me since I joined the department,” MacKinnon added.
“I guess you’ll find a place for this on the wall with all the other awards” and commendations, noted GMSP Moderator Ben Schuck, who presented the Officer of the Month plaque to Saviers. “The Chamber of Commerce thanks you for the more than 30 years you have been serving our community.”Saviers said he plans to “relax for awhile and start a second career,” and he thanked the community for its ongoing support. “It’s been a great 33 years” serving Santa Paula, while forging strong working relationships and friendships including, city native Saviers noted, Mayor Bob Gonzales, the former SPPD chief. “I’ve know many of you” for many years, and Saviers thanked the Chamber for the honor.John Macik/Santa Paula Chevrolet provides the Chamber award plaques.
