On Thursday, May 1, the Santa Paula High School JV softball team hosted Carpinteria in the final game of the 2008 JV season. The Lady Cards prevailed over a much-improved Carpinteria team, winning with a score of 9-4.
Carpinteria held a 1-0 lead after three and a half innings, “but then the Cardinal bats came alive,” according to Coach Sam Cathcart. Santa Paula scored 3 in the fourth inning, 5 in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth. The JVs also got “ a gutty pitching performance” from Raeleen Hernandez.
The Lady Cards ended the game with 12 hits. Alexis Hernandez had 3 hits and scored 2 runs; Joleen Zuniga also had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. Jaymee McInerney had 2 hits; and Angie Vasquez had “the hit of the day” with a triple that drove in 2 runs and “just missed going over the fence by about two inches.”
The Lady Cards had a disappointing outing against Fillmore on April 29, losing that game, but “they bounced back nicely against Carpinteria.” The JVs ended their season with a 10-7 record, taking 2nd place in the League with a 4-2 record.
Co-Head Coaches Cathcart and Henry Jacinto are “very pleased and proud of all the girls. It was a great way to end a wonderful season.”
