It’ll be a four-pack of fun this weekend in Santa Paula, with free events that the whole family will love.

If you enjoy pre-1975 classic and vintage cars, Cruise Nite on Main Street is the only place to be on Friday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. Cruise Nite offers hundreds of sweet rides on display from 10th to 7th Streets, the chance to buy a custom designed (by artist Wendell Dowling) Cruise Nite T-shirt (in this tenth year the shirts, a different one each month featuring a Cruise Nite regular, have become hot collectibles), and entertainment by Santa Paula’s own rocking songbird Angela Skeels.

The Angela Skeels Band features Angela on guitar singing a variety of songs made famous by The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Madonna and others, while backed up by drummer Brian Hernandez, bass player Jim Stephenson and guitar player Paul Skeels.

Downtown restaurants are eager to offer Cruise Nite delights, and several merchants have extended Cruise Nite hours to accommodate the crowd that the event always brings.

Saturday at 9 a.m. is the Friends of Blanchard Community Library Big Spring Book Festival, where bibliophiles can peruse thousands of gently used and much loved books to buy at bargain basement prices: 50 cents for hardcover books and 25 cents for paperbacks, with Better Books starting at $1. The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Big Spring Book Sale offers even more bargains from 2 to 3 p.m., when all merchandise is half-price.

The 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Silent Auction is always a popular component of the sale, offering rare and collectible tomes, many of which appeal to collectors of local and/or state history. This year the Silent Auction features everything from a rare copy of “Glancing Through the Headlines” offering fascinating snippets of local news culled from the Santa Paula Chronicle 1916-1924 by historian Mary Alice Orcutt Henderson (president of the Santa Paula Historical Society) to “Middle American” the plain spoken autobiography of the late Floyd Hair, a well-known Santa Paulan. Other Silent Auction books range from “California: A Snapshot in Time, 1850” inscribed by author Janice Marschner to a book of photographs by the acclaimed environmentalist/photographer Ansel Adams.

Saturday will also be the kickoff of the popular Santa Paula Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society, at Jones Field at Santa Paula High School. The Relay starts at 10:30 a.m. and lasts 24 hours while teams - this year there are about 40 signed up so far - circle the track continuously because “Cancer never sleeps.”

The Survivors Walk and the Luminaries Lighting Ceremony (the latter occurs at dusk on Saturday) are also features of Relay of Life, which also offers around the clock live entertainment, the opportunity to camp overnight with friends and family, and plenty of fun fellowship for participants and their enthusiastic supporters.

The First Sunday of the Month at the Santa Paula Airport is a chance to get up close and personal with classic and vintage aircraft and those who love and fly them. First Sunday, held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., also offers the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula, in several airport locations, detailing the history of the famous airport, special collections and more amid a backdrop of dozens of aircraft put on display by their proud owners. The Aviation Museum of Santa Paula Gift Shoppe (located at CP Aviation) is the perfect place to buy something aviation-related and special for Mother’s Day.
