On Thursday, April 24, the Santa Paula High School JV softball team traveled to Malibu for a League contest, coming away with a 14-8 victory in what Coach Sam Cathcart named “one of the strangest games of all time.” The Lady Cards were “always in control,” in spite of 9 infield errors that gifted Malibu 8 unearned runs. Santa Paula pitcher Raeleen Hernandez “was on her game,” striking out 13 batters. And in spite of the number of errors, Cathcart noted, “It was just one of those things. They actually made several outstanding defensive plays.”The Lady Cards had 16 hits: Raeleen Hernandez had 4 hits and 4 RBIs, and Joleen Zuniga had 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Kassie Espinoza, Alexis Hernandez and Diana Ochoa had 2 hits each.Santa Paula scored 4 in the first inning, 3 in the second, 1 in the third, 4 in the fourth, and 2 in the sixth. In the seventh inning the Cards allowed Malibu to score 5 runs due to 5 errors, with only eight players due to injuries. “Fortunately, Raeleen was able to strike out the side,” said Cathcart.
