The action of concerned neighbors who noticed suspicious activity and reported it to police led to the arrest of a man on suspicion of car burglary, his second arrest in less than months, according to a Santa Paula Police Department spokesman. The incident occurred Sunday, April 27, when residents of the 1300 block of Manzanita Drive - well aware of the rash of vehicle burglaries that have taken place in the city - called the SPPD at about 7:24 p.m., according to Sergeant Troyce Reynolds.
“The subject had been sitting in a vehicle that did not belong to him,” and when Officer Jeremy Watson arrived on the scene he “noticed the subject walking south on Laurel Road.” When Watson attempted to stop the subject to talk to him, Reynolds said, the man “ran... Officer Watson gave chase on foot and was able to quickly apprehend the subject,” although the suspect “physically resisted Officer Watson’s attempts to subdue him.” After several minutes, Officer Watson was able to get control of the subject, identified as Nestor Mayorquin, 29.
According to Lieutenant Mike Saviers, Mayorquin had been arrested March 8 on suspicion of vehicle burglary and being under the influence of methamphetamine after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of stolen property in possession of a passenger. The property was traced back to a Dartmouth Street garage, where Mayorquin, of Honduras, was living, and where police found dozens of items reported stolen from vehicle burglaries as well as mailboxes. He is now listed as a transient, said Saviers.
Watson, who reportedly scaled a fence before tackling Mayorquin, received a minor injury to his hand and “then got some pepper spray on him during the fight with the suspect.”
Saviers said that officers also “located items that had been taken earlier that day from a vehicle at St. Sebastian Church” in the area of Railroad Avenue and 9th Street that had not yet been reported stolen. The victim was of the earlier theft was notified by the SPPD.
Mayorquin was arrested on suspicion of vehicle burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. He was booked into Ventura County Jail, where he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
