If you like playing poker - or just helping a worthy cause - then you’ll want to join a game to benefit the Santa Paula Fire Fighters Association. The Texas Hold’em Tournament will be held April 5 starting at 7 p.m. at Logsdon’s Restaurant at the Santa Paula Airport. It costs only $50 to buy in for the tournament, which will feature opportunity drawings to add to the fun.

“Last time we had about 35 people” who took part in the SPFFA Texas Hold’em Tournament, said Association President Captain Gil Segovia. “We intend to have about 70” at the upcoming event.

“Texas Hold’em is pretty simple poker, but we had people that just came last time and donated $50 without playing... personally I don’t play, but a lot of my friends and some of my family do,” said Segovia. “It’s a fun time, a real fun thing.”

And a good thing: the SPFFA is planning to use the proceeds from the poker tournament to continue to support youth services and programs. Segovia said that the association “for the first time sponsored a boys’ Little League team and a girls softball team. In the past, and we will continue to do so, the SPFFA has donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley,” among others.

The SPFFA has benefited the Boys & Girls Club by offering dinner for six at the firehouse, always a popular item at fundraising auctions. “The association pays for all the food and drinks when we do those things.”

Segovia said his goal as the association president is to “raise quite a bit of money and do more for schools and kids, get the association out in the community more.” Or invite the community in: several members of the SPFFA acted as Big Brothers to two young boys, “showed them around the fire station, had them hang out, took them to lunch and the movies, and we’ll be looking to do that again... we’re in the process of picking up another couple of kids,” said Segovia.

Area merchants have been generous to the upcoming Texas Hold’em Tournament, donating meals (La Cabaña has already signed up), services, and even a weekend getaway to the Chumash Casino as prizes for the opportunity drawings.
