A jubilant Julie Schmidt cut the ceremonial ribbon on Friday, August 25, 2006, making the Grand Opening of the North Fillmore Neil C. Schmidt branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley official. The Grand Opening occasion marks the addition of the tenth location in the valley, which now includes two in Santa Paula, two in Fillmore, one in Piru and five after school programs at elementary schools in Santa Paula. Dr. Schmidt was instrumental in the addition of the Boys & Girls Club to the North Fillmore Police Storefront. Neil C. Schmidt helped us with the McCabe Foundation and they generously have helped to start this new program in his honor.
Deputy Miguel Gonzales commented that the addition “brought heart to the building”. Mayor Ernie Villegas was on hand with kind words as was Martin Hernandez of Supervisor Kathy Long’s office who presented Boys & Girls Club Board President Mike Mobley with a certificate. Mike Mobley in turn presented to Julie Schmidt a plaque to be hung at the new site. Jane Deal of Boys & Girls Clubs of America came to join in the festivities. Also on hand were several School Board Members as well as Boys & Girls Club Board Members, friends, parents, staff and last but not least the club kids who were extremely well behaved.
Each of the ten Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley sites provide a safe environment in which children can receive informal guidance from our caring adult staff. Our youth development philosophy encourages a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness and influence. The Boys & Girls Clubs are supported by grants, fundraisers and the generosity of individuals in the community.
The next fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club will be on October 28th. We will be having the “Be Cool for Kids” Annual Auction and Dinner at the Ventura Beach Marriott. On this pre-Halloween weekend, be prepared to dress up in a Totally Super Cool costume, Dazzle with Diamonds, be just Peachy Platinum, or a Groovy Golden Oldie.
