Chamber announces annual award winners

Doug Nelson has been named Santa Paula’s Citizen of the Year for 2005, according to Mike Odle, President of the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce.

Doug Nelson has been named Santa Paula’s Citizen of the Year for 2005, according to Mike Odle, President of the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce. “Doug has been one of those quiet citizens who volunteers his time and talents where needed most. Part of the test of whether or not the committee has made a good selection is based on how shocked they are when they hear they have been selected.”The Business of the Year is ARP, Automotive Racing Products located in the Lemonwood Industrial complex, an important Santa Paula business because of the well-paying jobs and they fact they have chosen to expand here. According to Odle, “They are generous with the community and have been the largest single donor to the City’s Santa Paula Beautiful clean-up day, among other events. They also opened a quality restaurant, named Hozy’s, when no one else was interested in doing so.” Owners are Gary Holzapfel, Founder and CEO, President Mike Holzapfel, and VP of Sales and Marketing, Bob Florine.Best Building Improvement Project goes to John and Susan Kulwiec for their work and major investment in completing their building renovation at 854 E. Main Street. Odle stated, “These entrepreneurs were deliberate about becoming a part of the real fabric of the Santa Paula economy; and while much of their work is done out of the area, they chose Santa Paula as their home base.”
Chairman of the selection committee is the 2004 Citizen of the Year, Xavier Montes. Committee members included recipients of this award from previous years. The awards will be presented at the Chamber Annual Meeting on January 21, 2004 at the Community Center.
